TWENTY-FOUR – PLOTTED OUT

Laughter.

For some reason, everyone laughed. I didn’t know what was so funny. Then again, I was across the room at the bar.

The round table had one of those Lazy Susan things that spun and there was plenty of food spread out for everyone.

Edwin’s wife's name was Lyndsay, they had been married since they were eighteen. She was really nice and she and her mother kept going in the kitchen to make more food.

While it was unnecessary, it was welcome. No one really had a hot meal in days.

Lyndsay and Ed gave me their blessing to visit the bar and that was where I was, watching, listening to them laugh.

I lifted a bottle of scotch. It was dusty and I uncorked it. I knew if there was a cork it was good stuff. Sniffing it, I heard my name.

“John.”

I turned around. Jurassic Park Girl was at the bar. She had a plate of food.

“Hey,” I said and poured a drink. “Did you want one?”

She giggled. “You’re silly. I’m fourteen.”

“Yeah, well, it’s like a law-free zone. Just thought I’d ask.”

“I’m good.”

“Fourteen. I thought you were like twelve.”

“I just turned fourteen. Here …” she pushed the plate to me. “You need to eat.”

“Wow, look at you being motherly.”

“You’ve been good to us.”

“No, I haven’t.”

“Yes, John, you have. My mom is going to be so happy.” She inched the plate closer. “Please eat. It’s really good.”

“It does look good.” I glanced down at the plate that had rice and noodles, along with vegetables and, it looked like, shrimp.

She held up a fork.

I downed my drink and took the fork. “Thank you, Lex.”

She laughed. “My name is Daisy and I know you know that.”

“Yeah, but it’s so hard to call you that. I keep thinking Dukes of Hazzard.”

“And Jurassic Park Kids is better?” she asked.

“Oh, yeah, a lot better.” I dove into the plate and took a bite. “Okay, this is really good. Did they say why they are being generous?”

“Some people are nice. They’re nice. Plus, they have to cook the food, or it will go bad.”

“Makes sense.” Another bite and I poured another glass.

I looked up when I heard JR.

“Oh my God,” he said. He shook his head as he walked by. “You just don’t stop.”

“Are you kidding me? It’s the apocalypse.”

Jurassic Park Girl gasped. “Is it?’

“Yeah, it could be.” I downed my drink.

Another shake of his head and JR said, “She’s a kid, can you have a bit more tact?”

“No. She watched her father die. After he ate someone. I’m pretty sure she can handle it.”

JR grumbled a “hmm. Daisy, we’re having ice cream. Why don’t you step away from the drunk?”

“I do want ice cream,” she said and smiled at me. “John, thank you for helping us. Even if you can’t get us home to Florida, we are happy you’re getting us out of the city.”

“I’m sure once we’re out, we’ll be able to call your mom,” I told her. “We’ll figure something out.”

Jurassic Park Girl nodded and walked away.
