TWENTY-FOUR â PLOTTED OUT
Laughter.
For some reason, everyone laughed. I didnât know what was so funny. Then again, I was across the room at the bar.
The round table had one of those Lazy Susan things that spun and there was plenty of food spread out for everyone.
Edwinâs wife's name was Lyndsay, they had been married since they were eighteen. She was really nice and she and her mother kept going in the kitchen to make more food.
While it was unnecessary, it was welcome. No one really had a hot meal in days.
Lyndsay and Ed gave me their blessing to visit the bar and that was where I was, watching, listening to them laugh.
I lifted a bottle of scotch. It was dusty and I uncorked it. I knew if there was a cork it was good stuff. Sniffing it, I heard my name.
âJohn.â
I turned around. Jurassic Park Girl was at the bar. She had a plate of food.
âHey,â I said and poured a drink. âDid you want one?â
She giggled. âYouâre silly. Iâm fourteen.â
âYeah, well, itâs like a law-free zone. Just thought Iâd ask.â
âIâm good.â
âFourteen. I thought you were like twelve.â
âI just turned fourteen. Here â¦â she pushed the plate to me. âYou need to eat.â
âWow, look at you being motherly.â
âYouâve been good to us.â
âNo, I havenât.â
âYes, John, you have. My mom is going to be so happy.â She inched the plate closer. âPlease eat. Itâs really good.â
âIt does look good.â I glanced down at the plate that had rice and noodles, along with vegetables and, it looked like, shrimp.
She held up a fork.
I downed my drink and took the fork. âThank you, Lex.â
She laughed. âMy name is Daisy and I know you know that.â
âYeah, but itâs so hard to call you that. I keep thinking Dukes of Hazzard.â
âAnd Jurassic Park Kids is better?â she asked.
âOh, yeah, a lot better.â I dove into the plate and took a bite. âOkay, this is really good. Did they say why they are being generous?â
âSome people are nice. Theyâre nice. Plus, they have to cook the food, or it will go bad.â
âMakes sense.â Another bite and I poured another glass.
I looked up when I heard JR.
âOh my God,â he said. He shook his head as he walked by. âYou just donât stop.â
âAre you kidding me? Itâs the apocalypse.â
Jurassic Park Girl gasped. âIs it?â
âYeah, it could be.â I downed my drink.
Another shake of his head and JR said, âSheâs a kid, can you have a bit more tact?â
âNo. She watched her father die. After he ate someone. Iâm pretty sure she can handle it.â
JR grumbled a âhmm. Daisy, weâre having ice cream. Why donât you step away from the drunk?â
âI do want ice cream,â she said and smiled at me. âJohn, thank you for helping us. Even if you canât get us home to Florida, we are happy youâre getting us out of the city.â
âIâm sure once weâre out, weâll be able to call your mom,â I told her. âWeâll figure something out.â
Jurassic Park Girl nodded and walked away.
